When you come into the life of the Church Calendar, the first sight is a colorful one. My parishioner, Lydia Slaughter, offered a great chart to keep in mind for the rest of the Church Year:
You will note all the colors coming out with great enthusiasm. These are not randomly selected. There is a majesty and mood to each season as we will explain at the end.
The Covenant of Many Colors
Colors were formally introduced in the Noahic Covenant in Genesis 9 when God provided a rainbow to symbolize his memorial to the new world. There were seven colors, and as I note in my upcoming book on the priesthood from Nogginose Press, these colors reflect the colors of the priests' garments and the tabernacle adornment in Exodus. God’s house and clothing are colorful and glorious.
