He appeared on magazine covers, received applause from television hosts, and was treated as though he had descended from Mount Sinai, carrying two tablets, three masks, and a federal grant application. For a season, his pronouncements were treated as unquestionable, and anyone who raised a hand was promptly sent to the principal’s office. Those who questioned him were viewed as the villains in Fauci’s kingdom.

But the applause of the age is a poor shelter from accountability. Today, the same man, once surrounded by cameras and celebrity praise, now sits before a Senate committee, invoking the Fifth Amendment and declining to answer questions. Rand Paul wasted no time placing Fauci in his deserved place.
